the day has finally arrived when i run linux on my computer. i chose ubuntu 6.06 because it looks nice, is popular and seems to be well supported.
i started the process of leaving windows xp for ubuntu at 11pm last night and fell sleep at 8am. woke up at 11 and at noon i had configured the screen resolution to the display’s native of 1280×1024. since i have an ati graphic card (x800gt), linux is simply hell on earth to install.
but right now i have to leave in order to meet robin at the train station!
Just like with every OS, there’s some tuning needed…I think Ubuntu needs to have th update servers set to something sensible, so that automatic updates work nicely. ATI should have drivers for their newest cards, but graphics chip makers are really bad in supporting Linux (I think I blogged about it…blame ATI).
automatic updates works like a dream for me. every time (and there\’s been two or three of them) there are updates available, a red symbol flashes on the top right corner. a few clicks later my system is updated. couldn\’t be better.
but did i mention that ATI sucks? i\’ll better make sure to say it again: ATI should be fucked out of business for their lousy linux \”support\”.
at the moment i\’m trying to get my dual displays to one extended desktop, instead of just mirroring each other. easier said than done, with a fucking ATI graphic card!!
