yle på internet

för att vara ett skattefinansierat bolag är inte särskilt skickligt på att tjäna allmänhetens intressen. och allmänheten, det är jag. så hör här.

yles elävä arkisto på internet genomförs på samma premisser som television i övrigt: centralstyrt bild & ljudflöde sänds ut till en stor massa, som reduceras till passiva mottagare. i televisionskontext är detta mer eller mindre ett tvång som följer av teknikens begränsningar, men på internet är det en följd av vilja och värderingar.

enligt vad yles vd mikael jungner idag säger kan vi vänta oss att i framtiden kunna “ladda ner” yles program över internet, en tid efter att de sänts på tv. som en fortsättning på projektet elävä arkisto ungefär. jungner uttrycker sig vidare:

– Leikkimielisesti voisi sanoa, että niitä tallennelaitteita ei tarvita, mutta tässä on nyt kyse pelkästään Yleisradion ohjelmista.

intressant syn på datorer – som vore internet bara en annan kanal för yle att do business as usual. vad jag just ogillar med jungners sätt att styra yle är oviljan att släppa kontrollen över det material som yle med skattefinansierade medel en gång har producerat. det kan vid en första anblick låta paradoxalt eftersom de sänder repriser på tv och i viss mån även tillgängliggör egenproducerat material på internet. men som elävä arkisto är ett levande exempel på, försöker yle simulera en televisionsliknande kontext, där yle fortsättningsvis styr flödet av det audiovisuella som skenbart flyktigt uppenbaras på en skärm. vad yle gör är att aktivt (genom val av medieformat som stöder drm) förhindra att materialet sparas på datorn. det må vara en kamp mot väderkvarnar, men själva strävan känns fel.

i grund och botten antar jag att det handlar om att yle vill fortsätta kontrollera spridningen av allt material de en gång producerat, vilket ger dem möjligheten att få ekonomisk vinning även i framtiden. men det finns inte ett tekniskt eller ekonomiskt hinder för yle att tillgängliggöra egenproducerat material i högupplöst videoformat och låta spridningen ske mer eller mindre gratis med hjälp av bittorrent.

i’d rather just sleep this day away but i’m too stingy to buy a cabin on the boat. viking line doesn’t quite make my day so i whine about it here instead, all thanks to my ngage still going strong.

now, i’ve been thinking, about a revolution that yet has to come. the horizontal sharing of information on the internet (as with p2p) could be transferred to another context, any context. like this: first,what today in most cases is just a phone with text messaging capabilities need to become capable of storing several Gb. ipods already do this, and some nokia models as well. but what they lack is a wireless connection range of about 50m and software supporting file sharing.

internet connectivity is as important. for now, gprs and wlan would suffice. maybe wlan could be the wireless technology connecting the devices both to the internet and each other. when it comes to the devices themselves, there is something that comes close, but not all the way: the umpc. the problem with umpc is that a) you can’t replace your phone with it and b) they’re too big to fit in your pocket.

basically nokia, apple/ipod and linux should make babies. nokia knows how to make phones and devices small enough, apple/ipod how to make cool devices for the USER (and not the phone operator) and linux is needed in order to put the user in CONTROL as well.

what is yet to be seen, is people sharing information anywhere, like they do on the internet already. it should be easy as lordi. then i would have something to do at the boat, because being with REAL people is outright unheard of and reading for the entrance exam
requires an attention span of more than 30 sec.

burning down the house

here’s my five cents about the recent confrontations between the finnish authorities and some citizens, and the culmination: the burnt storehouses in central helsinki.

the VR storehouses in central helsinki has been debated for years. decisions has been made on different levels to tear down the storehouses incoming week to make way for a music hall, (think classical music). it seems the green party, oranssi ry, some young people in general and the precariat especially were opposing. as sampsa put it:

The place where this all took place has been a center for alternative happenings, flee markets, night clubs and couple of bars, basically a place where young people met their friends.

my impression is that a loosely knit group of people has, during the years, taken emotional possession of the VR storehouses. maybe because they a) are young and b) don’t belong to at least a middle class family. so you’re young and you don’t have the economic means to participate that much in society. but anybody wants a place where you can just be, together with your friends. well if you don’t have money, were are you going to hang out in helsinki? i’m not sure if i’m on to something here, because i simply don’t know. but i can hypothesize.

i can imagine that the police and firefighters emerging at the party could’ve felt very provocative indeed for the participants. it seems possible that the party and fire were under control, thus making it unnecessary to intervene, from the perspective of the participants. legally, of course, the intervention might’ve been necessary at the time reports of a fire came to knowledge of the authorities. but if you’ve taken possession of a place, generally you do not want any authorities to intervene unless you see it absolutely necessary.

having already lost the fight for the place, and have it rubbed in, since the authorities crashed the party, den brända jordens taktik (tactics of the burnt soil?) comes in just handy. the logic is not about reason. there is no point in burning down the house. but you can be in a state of mind where nothing has any point, and then it makes perfect sense. self-destructive tendencies are familiar to me when i’ve lost something tremendously precious. burning down your own house, for example, is as much an attack against the building as it is towards your self. (not having personal experience though.) or for that matter: leaving someone before left behind – destroying something before someone else gets the possibility to.
